Simon Phillips
For me, Simon Phillips is simply one of the best drummer ever. Nobody has had such an impact on my own drumming.
It was Simon Phillips who brought back the fun of drumming when I had somewhat lost it for half a year. I saw him for the first time in Pete York´s Super Drumming. First of yll he seemed to be a bit arrogant to me as he refused to use a click while playing. But things do change, and in the meantime he is using it for certain songs.
After seeing him the first time in Koblenz I was totally fascinated by the person Simon Phillips. He is one of the few possessing "real" stature. When I was in Koblenz with my father, I was obviously there mainly because of him - being a drummer myself. But I also wanted the other musicians to sign the "Simbiosis" CD. We got the signature of Andy Timmons, of the bassist and of Ray Russell. Then we came to Simon Phillips, who was busy signing all that stuff with that big black Edding. Seeing that his fellow musicians had signed using the small pen we had brought, he asked to sign with that same pen!! Now that is really huge! Despite the fact that it was his band, the "Simon Phillips" band and he himselkf the star, he just did not want to put himself above the other musicians. "Mr. Phillips, I am very impressed!"
I highly recommend his instructional videos "Simon Phillips" and "Simon Phillips Returns". If you should want even more challenge, get his "Simbiosis" and "Another Lifetime" albums. Right now, Simon Phillips is very busy as a producer and mixer.
Among others, he mixed and produced Planet X´s "Moonbabies". Go check the live dates of his band "Toto" if you want to see him live. He is their permanent drummer since 1995.
